Kathy's Cakes

For 30 years, Kathy Montgomery has been baking and decorating in other people's kitchens (including Nordstrom's in UTC and Standlee's Cake and Party Shop in chula Vista). This week, she hung out her shingle in a Paradise Hills shop and is ready for brides and birthday revelers.

Montgomery primarily bakes white and chocolate cakes for weddings, but complements them with fillings including champagne, raspberry, tiramisu, and hazelnut. Bridal couples get cake samples and an hour consultation to pore over her portfolio, which includes trendy cupcake wedding cakes and seashell themed confections.

Montgomery steers clear of the super sweet and smooth fondant icing because she doesn't like the way it tears up a cake when it is cut. She says she can achieve a similar surface with her European and American buttercream.

Typically, wedding cakes are priced at $2 to $2.25 per slice, with extra charges for more labor-intensive work such as gumpaste flowers.

Thank you so much for providing us with such delicious cakes at both our wedding and rehearsal dinner. Everyone just raved about how good they were. We did not freeze the top layer because it was too good and we wanted to enjoy it now rather than a year later when it wouldn't taste as good.
